Get ready for 'Judgment Day' May 21

May 17, 2011 by Thomas Raphael-Nakos

Did you know that the world is coming to an end? Did you know that it is going to happen sooner than you think? Have you read the billboards warning you God’s judgment “will” take place on May 21, this Saturday?

The source of this prophecy is Harold Camping, president and general manager of Family Stations, Inc., also known as Family Radio. In a recent interview on National Public Radio's “Morning Edition,” he said there was “absolutely no doubt” the world would come to an end May 21 based on his interpretation of Biblical readings.

The Good, the Bad, the Beautiful. . . and the Ugly

I have loved movies ever since I was a child and escaped to the Palace Theater in my home town Saturday afternoons for cartoons, an adventure serial and a double feature, all for a quarter.

There has hardly been a week in my life, except when my son was a baby, that I didn’t see at least one movie.

As I age, I find fewer and fewer films appeal to me. It seems Hollywood puts most of its money on the demographic providing the highest profit -- the adolescent male.

Reflections on a beautiful soul

December 8, 2010 by Thomas Raphael-Nakos

John O'Donohue, an Irish Catholic poet and philosopher, died in his sleep at the age 52 on January 3, 2008. He was a beautiful man with a beautiful soul. The following excerpt from his poem, “On the Death of a Beloved Friend,” was posted on O'Donohue's website after his untimely death.

Your love was like the dawn

Brightening over our lives

Awakening beneath the dark

A further adventure of colour….

Let us not look for you only in memory,

Where we would grow lonely without you.

You would want us to find you in presence,

Beside us when beauty brightens,
