Official Minutes of the October 16, 2000, Special Meeting
1. Call to Order
The Board of Directors of the Bettendorf Community School District, in the County of Scott, state of Iowa, met in open session according to Iowa law for the special meeting at the Ray Stensvad Administration Center, 3311 Central Avenue, Bettendorf, Iowa, on October 16, 2000. President Roski called the meeting to order at 5:08 p.m. Lynne Lindstrom, Board Secretary, verified that the meeting notice had been posted and mailed to the media as required by law.
Members present: Directors Arney, Castro, Luton, Roski, Weigle.
Members absent: Directors Anderson, Wahlstrand.
Other officials present: John Perdue, Superintendent; Carol Webb, Assistant Superintendent; Lynne Lindstrom, Board Secretary.
2. Agenda Approval.
Motion by Director Luton, seconded by Director Arney, to approve the agenda as presented.
Ayes: 5 Directors Arney, Castro, Luton, Roski, Weigle.
Nays: 0
Absent: 2 Directors Anderson, Wahlstrand. Motion carried 5-0-2.
Director Anderson arrived at 5:15 p.m.
3. School Improvement Team Reports.
School Improvement Teams shared their goals and primary methods/strategies for achieving these goals. The following goals for the 2000/01 school year were presented:
Neil Armstrong:
Improve student achievement in reading comprehension and fluency.
Gain additional proficiencies in using various technologies with an emphasis in integrating technology into teaching and learning.
Improve student achievement in math concepts and problem solving.
Improve student achievement by promoting the development of positive assets in all Armstrong students.
Herbert Hoover:
Increase student performance in comprehension and vocabulary on district assessments.
Identify student needs with the "Every Day Math Program" and determine strategies to meet those needs.
Promote the development of positive assets in students.
Grant Wood:
Have all students succeed in the areas of math, science, and literacy, with a special focus on increasing the number of students scoring above the 40th percentile level as measured by ITBS, BRI, and New Standards Math Test.
Provide an orderly and safe school by increasing positive assets, character development, reducing negative behaviors, thereby fostering a caring school community.
Mark Twain:
Eighty percent of our students will show growth in reading.
Eighty percent of our students will show growth in math problem solving.
Eighty percent of our students will increase their positive assets by one (out of the forty identified by the Search Institute).
Paul Norton:
Improve student achievement through improving literacy.
Improve student achievement through students assuming more responsibility for their own learning.
Increase student achievement through improving instructional practices with an emphasis on developing integrated/thematic units that incorporate technology as a transparent tool.
Investigate the concept of year-round education as a means of increasing student achievement.
Thomas Jefferson:
Demonstrate improved reading comprehension by increasing the percentage of individuals scoring in the intermediate and high performance levels as measured on the ITBS, BRI, and DRA pre- and post assessments.
Demonstrate improved math achievement by increasing the percentage of individuals scoring in the intermediate and high performance levels as measured on the ITBS.
Bettendorf Middle School:
Improve student achievement in all areas, emphasizing math, science, and reading skills where appropriate.
Improve school climate to enhance student ownership of learning.
Bettendorf High School:
Develop a more physically and emotionally secure building environment and culture through programs such as Positive Assets, DARE, etc.
Revisit the block schedule and seek out, if necessary, improvements and modifications to enhance student learning.
Provide teachers with opportunities to expand knowledge and expertise in their content areas to increase student learning.
Integrate and utilize technology in a variety of established courses.
Increase student achievement in reading, math, and science, specifically increasing the percentage of students performing in the intermediate and high levels on district-wide assessments.
4. Adjournment.
Motion by Director Anderson to adjourn the meeting at 7:00 p.m.
