Bettendorf city officials look to offload fitness center to "save taxpayers" $250,000, but $1.7 million annual tax subsidy of Family Museum not on table

Bettendorf city officials say they want to offload the Life Fitness Center to the Scott County Y to "save taxpayers" $250,000 a year.

But just a few blocks north and west of the fitness center sits the city's Family Museum that required six times that amount – nearly $1.7 million – in tax dollars last year to meet payroll.

As Bettendorf city leaders confront revenue shortfalls caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the Life Fitness Center appears to have a big "sell me" target on its back.

In his presentation to alderman Tuesday (4/21), City Finance Director Jason Schadt listed "Divest of Loss Generating Enterprises" as one of the possible short-term objectives to trim city expenses.

And, in discussions earlier this month, city officials had a more specific phrase for "loss generating enterprises" – close and sell the Life Fitness Center.

Bettendorf looks to spend $100,000 for study to map future of fitness facility, pool and community center

Bettendorf is expected to take the first step this week in developing a plan to replace the city's aging fitness facility, pool and community center.

Proposals have been received from four recreational planning consultants and the city's park board is expected to award the contract at a special meeting Thursday (3/22).

All four proposals would cost approximately $100,000 and lead to creation of a recommendation on the future of the Life Fitness Center, Splash Landing Aquatic Center and the Herbert D. Goettsch Community Center.
