'Last Child in the Woods' author speech Sat., Aug. 23

Richard Louv, author of 'Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder,' will speak at 11 a.m., Sat., Aug. 23 at the iwireless Center, Moline, as part of the RiverWay 2008 Upper Mississippi River Conference.

Louv has helped spawn the Children & Nature Network (www.cnaturenet.org), an organization helping to build the international movement to connect children with nature.

A flock of ducks enjoy a newly created sandbar off Bettendorf's Leach Park. As the Mississippi River recedes from flood stage earlier in the year, new sand bars have emerged.

The steel geese scupltures at Middle Park Lagoon sport a white coat of snow after the storm Wednesday (2/7) which left the area with more than seven inches of snow and led to the cancellation of school classes and most other local events and activities.

Winter wonderland along Duck Creek Parkway



A thick layer of snow covers tree limbs along Duck Creek Parkway, Bettendorf. More than six inches of new snow blanketed the city Friday (12/28). The wet snow was transformed into snow forts and snowmen by area children, off from school for the holidays.
